Plug building

What do you do for fun when you can't go fishing?

Anybody else turning plugs on island? I thought I could save money making my own plugs - my first one cost $1000 instead of $25.

My brother used to make his own plugs. Mostly bluefish plugs. He would melt lead and add it to his plugs. Saved a lot of $$ that year by making his own plugs.

I haven't tried pouring lead directly into the belly holes of my plugs yet and it won't work for my tailweights, but I have poured my own jigheads in the past. I have been buying premade plug weights, but it would be cheaper making my own. The whole process is very time consuming - if I was cutting/bending/sanding the metal lips from scratch, pouring my own weights, and painting custom glass eyes one by one I think it would take me over 5 hours to make one versus the 3 it takes me at the moment. Catching fish on plugs/baits you make is priceless though.

We were pouring quite a few jigs last summer.
Koz ties a pretty mean jig.

He's working on a design for a wooden plug that he can turn out in numbers.
I've seen the prototype and it's pretty slick.

I used to make a few wood plugs here and there.
Now I like to find them washed up on the beach in the Fall, clean 'em up, and use 'em next season.
